The 1922 Australian Penny was minted in Melbourne & Sydney, Australia with a mintage of approx. 12,697,000 (all variants).

Its rarity is dependent upon which variety it is.

This is the "Indian Obverse" with curve base lettering, determined by the alignment of the "N" in "OMN" and the Colon with the inner denticles of the obverse, and the "Bee sting" extending from the base of the 9 in 1922.

I would grade this example as Extremely Fine.

Read on for further information on the 1922 penny and its varieties.

Two obverse / reverse die combinations were used during 1922 when making Australian pennies: The 'Indian obverse', and the 'London obverse'. In each case the same reverse die was used.

There are also exist scarce 'wide date' and 'wide date, toenail 9' varieties.

The London obverse, (heads), variation has 177 outer rim denticles, while the Indian obverse variation has 178 outer rim denticles.

Both obverses feature the image of Australia's, (England's), Monarch at the time, King George V facing to the left, with the legend reading the Latin "GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:"

This translates roughly to "George V, by the grace of God, King of all Britons, defender of the faith, Emperor of India"
