HMAS Sydney II Commemorative Coin - 2000

This uncirculated aluminum-bronze coin, released by the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) in 2000, serves as a poignant memorial to those who lost their lives on the HMAS Sydney II. Two versions of the coin were released:

  • 'C' Mintmark (Canberra, Gallery Press): Mintage of 71,367
  • 'S' Mintmark (Sydney Royal Easter Show): Mintage of 34,277

Historical Significance

On 19 November 1941, the HMAS Sydney II sank after a fierce battle with the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. All 645 crew members perished in the tragedy, making it the largest single-ship loss for the Australian Navy and the largest loss of life on any Allied ship in World War II where the entire crew was lost.

The circumstances surrounding the sinking remain shrouded in mystery. It wasn't until March 2008 that the wrecks of both the Sydney II and the Kormoran were finally discovered off the coast of Western Australia.

Condition

The coins are presented in their original coin cards. Some cards may be folded, but all remain in good, clean condition. Some toning may be present.
