1931 Australian Penny - London Obverse with "Normal 1" - Extremely Fine but Cleaned
The 1931 Australian Penny was minted in Melbourne, Australia.
With an approx. mintage of 494,000, it is considered harder for the period.
Four obverse / reverse die combinations were used during 1931 when making Australian pennies: The 'Indian obverse', the 'London obverse', the '177 bead reverse', and the '174 bead reverse'.
There is also a variation with dates, specifically some coins have the last '1' in the date lower than the other numbers, commonly known as a 'dropped 1' variety.
This is the "London Obverse" variety with the "Normal 1" and 177 bead reverse.
I would grade this example as Extremely Fine though it appears to have been cleaned at some stage.
The obverse features the robed and crowned bust of King George V facing left, with the legend:
'GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT:OMN:REX F.D.IND:IMP:'
The reverse shows an inner beaded circle with the words 'ONE HALF PENNY' above a small scroll, surrounded by the legend: 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA', and the date below.
