1981 Australian 2 Cent Coin Set - Royal Australian Mint and Royal Mint, Llantrisant (Wales) Varieties
The 1981 Australian Two Cent Coin had a massive mintage of 250 million in total.
This was due the industrial action taken at the Royal Australian Mint, and the Australian Government turning to both the Perth Mint and Royal Mint, Llantrisant (Wales) to keep production at required levels.
- The Royal Australian Mint minted 97.4 million,
- The Perth Mint 81.8 million,
- and the Royal Mint, Llantrisant 70.8 million.
Unfortunately the Perth Mint did not add its typical mintmark to its releases, and these are indistinguishable from the RAM coin.
The Royal Mint, Llantrisant however did adjust their dies, which now allows collectors to at least add this different variety to their 2 cent coin collection.
This can be distinguished by the lettering on the obverse legend being closer to the rim than the RAM an PM varieties.
The Royal Australian Mint variety is imaged first, with the Royal Mint, Llantrisant second.
Each available coin is in a similar or better grade.
The coins are good examples of the mintage differences of the 1981 two cent. A good addition to my collection and delivered very quickly.
