The Masterpieces in Silver series was produced from 1988 to 2011 by the Royal Australian Mint. This long running coin series is dedicated to Australian themes and events that have shaped Australia as a nation.

The 1996 Masterpieces in Silver- Proof sterling silver five coin set pays tribute to the National Identity of Australia.  The series pays tribute to people or events that have influenced and made us uniquely Australian. Coins pay tribute to Tom Robert, Henry Lawson, Dame Nellie Melba, Australian Stockman and the famous Melbourne Cup horse race that stops a nation each year

All reverse sides of the coins were designed by Vladimir Gottwald, with the Obverse of each carrying the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf

Coins are struck to proof quality and are $5 Denomination. Crafted from 92.5% Silver, weighing 35.79 grams and 38.90mm in diameter each.

Stored in a large clamshell case, with certificate of authenticity. This set also has an external box to keep the case protected.

Some very minor wear to the external box has occurred, with the case remaining in almost perfect condition (rare for these earlier sets!).
