2004 Royal Australian Mint Koala Baby Proof Set - with 43 gram Silver Medallion and Holographic $1 Coin
Baby Proof and Mint Sets have been very popular with coin collectors.
They are a very popular gift with godparents, grandparents and babies parents buying the sets for the new born in their life.
This set represents the annual Baby Set release by the Royal Australian Mint with proof versions of Australia's circulating coins
- Five Cents
- Ten Cents
- Twenty Cents
- Fifty Cents
- Holographic One Dollar
- Two Dollar and
- 43 gram Sterling Silver Medallion
The six coins are housed sealed in a see-both-sides hard plastic case and presented in a special protective wallet and a colourful presentation box.
The Special Sterling Silver (.925) Medallion is has a weight of 43 grams, a diameter of 45mm and a thickness of 3mm.
An unfortunate side effect of the holographic application in 95% of these (and the standard proof sets) I have seen is toning.
Sometimes it is restricted to just the $1 coin, sometimes it has spread to other coins.
Fortunately in the baby sets each coin is individually encapsulated, which has spared all of the coins (with the exception of the $1 coin) this effect (unlike the standard proof sets which all share the same case).
The reverse of the $1 remains lovely, however the Obverse has toned quite dramatically.
Please see images for a personal inspection of both the set and the $1 coin.Only 16,000 of these sets were produced, it carries a current catalogue value of $210.00
