Discover a significant era of Australian numismatic history with this Australian Pre-Decimal Coin Set, a souvenir collection featuring four iconic Florins spanning 1927 to 1963. This set offers a fascinating insight into the evolution of Australian coinage and commemorates key national events.
This distinctive 4-coin set includes:
- 1927 Opening of First Parliament House, Canberra Florin: Australia's first commemorative florin, marking the opening of the Federal Parliament House in Canberra. The reverse depicts Parliament House and the inscription "Parliament House," designed by George Kruger Gray, with an obverse portrait of King George V by Sir Edgar MacKennal. It has a mintage of 2,000,000.
- 1951 50th Anniversary of Federation Florin: Commemorating 50 years since Australia's federation, this coin features a crown, sword, mace, and the Stars of the Southern Cross on its reverse, symbolising British parliamentary traditions and the Australian flag. Designed by William Leslie Bowles, with an obverse portrait of King George VI by Thomas Humphrey Paget. Mintage: 2,000,000.
- 1954 Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II Florin: Struck to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's historic first visit to Australia in February 1954. The reverse, designed by William Leslie Bowles, shows a lion and a kangaroo standing side by side without commemorative inscription. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. Mintage: 4,000,000.
- Regular Issue Florin of Queen Elizabeth II, 1953-63: A regular issue florin of Queen Elizabeth II, struck annually from 1953 (the coronation year) to 1963 (excluding 1955). The reverse features the Commonwealth coat-of-arms approved in 1912 (designed by George Kruger Gray), and the obverse displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick. Mintage for the 1953-63 period: 127,000,000 (approx.).
These coins offer an authentic representation of Australia's pre-decimal currency, which was converted to decimal currency on 14th February 1966, with one new dollar equalling ten shillings. This set is an ideal acquisition for collectors of Australian coinage and enthusiasts of historical currency.
