1967 New Zealand 2c Error Coin - New Zealand/Bahamas Mule - About Uncirculated.
This is a rare opportunity to own a fascinating piece of New Zealand numismatic history: a 1967 two cent 'mule' error coin.
These intriguing coins were mistakenly struck with the New Zealand reverse ('tails') and the Bahamas five cent obverse ('heads'). Such errors occurred because both coins were produced by the Royal Mint, and the Bahamas five cent was very close in size to the New Zealand two cent.
The muling of these coins happened during the introduction of decimal currency in New Zealand, causing quite a stir amongst Kiwis. While officials believed up to 100,000 mules might have been struck, approximately 60,000 were eventually recovered after a manual inspection of around 600,000 two cent pieces.
In About Uncirculated condition, this coin retains a trace of cartwheel lustre, further enhanced by the attractive development of rainbow toning in sections of the legends. It is important to note that some spots of verdigris are present on the coin (as shown in images).
It comes supplied in a brand new QUADRUM Intercept case, ensuring its protection and preservation for years to come.
A unique addition to any coin collection, this 1967 New Zealand two cent mule is a tangible reminder of a curious minting mishap.
