About this Coin:
Introduced on 14 May 1984, the $1 coin was designed to replace the one-dollar banknote due to its superior durability and cost-effectiveness. Because the coin was unveiled mid-year, it was not included in the standard 1984 Proof Set, leading the Mint to release it as a standalone item for collectors. This 1984 issue is unique as the only dollar coin to feature the Arnold Machin portrait, as all subsequent "Mob of Roos" years transition to the Maklouf or later effigies. This Proof strike represents the highest quality of minting available, capturing the debut of Australia's most enduring coin design in exquisite detail.
