This $1 coin is the second release in the Royal Australian Mint's Inspirational Australians dollar coin series. It recognises Steve Irwin, a passionate believer in wildlife conservation with an unconventional style and a charismatic personality. Steve Irwin was a larger-than-life character tragically killed in 2006 while doing what he loved best—working with animals.

Through his 'Crocodile Hunter' television documentaries, the establishment of the Australia Zoo in southern Queensland, the creation of the wildlife charity 'Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors', and much more, Steve successfully brought issues of wildlife conservation into the public arena in a way no one had done previously.
