2016 50c Uncirculated Carded Coin – The Western Front: Battle of Pozières

Commemorate a pivotal and costly chapter of World War I with this official 2016 50c uncirculated carded coin from the Royal Australian Mint. Issued for the ANZAC Centenary, this coin marks the centenary of the Battle of Pozières (July–August 1916) on the Somme in France.

Australian forces played a central role in capturing and defending the village of Pozières and its strategic windmill height. Over seven weeks of fierce combat and unprecedented artillery bombardment, Australian troops held their ground, suffering over 23,000 casualties in an engagement described as "more deeply sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth."
