2018 RAF Centenary - Spitfire £2 Coin - Brilliant Uncirculated Coin In Folder
To mark the Royal Air Force's centenary year in 2018, The Royal Mint released a series of coins celebrating the service's proud history. This edition is the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) £2 coin, honouring the iconic Spitfire, arguably Britain's best-known aircraft. The RAF, founded in the last months of the First World War, was the first independent air force ever established.
Design and Significance
This commemorative coin is part of a series marking the different eras of aircraft that have served in this pioneering branch of the British armed forces:
- The reverse design by brothers Neil and Robert Talbot takes the iconic Spitfire fighter plane as its centrepiece, showing three Spitfires side-by-side in flight, inscribed with the centenary dates and 'SPITFIRE RAF' around the outer rim.
- The edge features the inscription 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA', the official motto for the RAF, which is Latin for 'through adversity to the stars'.
- The obverse displays the fifth UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark.
This is a great gift for aircraft and military enthusiasts.
Features and Presentation
The coin is a £2 Crown (UK Legal Tender) with a Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) finish. It has a weight of 12.00 grams and a diameter of 28.40 millimetres, with an alloy composed of a cupro-nickel inner section and a nickel-brass outer ring.
