Subject Significance

Completed on 22 August 1872, the 2,839-kilometre Overland Telegraph line was a monumental engineering feat spearheaded by Charles Todd. By connecting Australia to the global telegraphic network, it instantly transformed national communication and reduced isolation from the rest of the world.
