Which Storage Is Right for Your Coins and Banknotes?

Start with your coin or banknote's format, then choose how you want to handle, organise, or display it. Check the product page for current sizes, pack options, and availability before ordering.

1. Is your coin graded or in original packaging?

  • Graded in a slab: Choose a case designed for certified coins. See protective cases.
  • In a mint card, presentation pack or existing capsule: Choose storage that fits the whole package. Measure its outside dimensions rather than just the coin.
  • Raw or loose: Choose among flips, card holders, capsules, or tubes.
  • Storing a banknote or PNC instead? Jump to banknote and PNC sleeves.

2. Check the size and fit

For loose coins, check diameter, thickness, and shape against the product specifications. A holder's window size is not necessarily the coin's exact diameter. For capsules, match the intended denomination or stated internal dimensions; do not force a coin into a tight fit. For albums and cases, check the dimensions of the holder or capsule as well.

3. Choose how you will use your collection

  • Label and sort individual coins: Flips or self-adhesive card holders.
  • View individual coins without repeatedly touching them: Capsules.
  • Store quantities of the same denomination: Tubes.
  • Browse an organised collection: Compatible album pages for your holders.
  • Display or store graded coins: A case that fits their slabs.

Flips: Flexible Storage with Room for a Label

Choose flips when you want to sort and label individual raw coins. Check the pocket dimensions and material description, and avoid overfilling or squeezing coins into undersized pockets.

Self-Adhesive Holders: Labelled, Flat Organisation

Choose card holders for individual coins you want to label and file. Select the window size recommended for your coin, centre the coin before sealing, and check the holder's outside dimensions against your album pages.

Note: These recommended sizes correspond to specific coin applications. Pack sizes and availability may vary.

Capsules: Individual Viewing and Handling

Choose capsules when you want to view and handle a coin through its enclosure rather than touching its surfaces. Confirm the fit for your particular issue, especially unusually thick, shaped, or commemorative coins.

Tubes: Compact Storage for Multiples

Choose tubes for quantities of the same denomination when compact storage matters more than individual display. Coins share a tube, so choose individual holders or capsules instead when you want each coin stored separately. Check capacity and fit, and avoid forcing the lid closed.

Albums & Pages: Browse an Organised Collection

Choose album pages when you want to arrange and view your collection by date, denomination, or theme. Match the page system to your binder and the pockets to your chosen holders. A page refill is not a complete album.

Protective Cases: Display & Slab Storage

For graded coins, choose a case designed for certified holders rather than a capsule intended for a raw coin. Keep the coin in its grading holder, and check slab compatibility, dimensions, and capacity before purchasing.

Banknote and PNC Sleeves: Choose by Length and Height

For a loose banknote, measure its length and height, then check the sleeve's usable internal dimensions before ordering. Leave enough room to insert and remove the note without bending it or forcing it into the sleeve. The sizes below are the listed product dimensions; check the product details rather than assuming they are the usable opening size.

Already graded? Keep a graded banknote in its grading holder and measure the whole holder, not just the note. Neither sleeve should be assumed to fit a grading holder without checking. For album storage, also check that the sleeve's outside dimensions fit the album pockets.

Store notes flat without crowding the sleeve. Check the manufacturer's material and care information; a sleeve is not a guarantee against moisture, fading, or other damage.

Graded Banknotes: An Album-Page Option

Lighthouse VARIO 1C Clear Sheet Protectors (Pack of 5) have one compartment with a listed pocket size of 195 × 263mm and an overall sheet size of 216 × 280mm.

These pages may suit a graded banknote holder if the entire holder fits comfortably inside the pocket, rotating it if needed. Measure the holder's outside length and height, allow clearance for insertion and removal, and check its thickness as well. Do not bend or force the holder into the pocket.

Keep the banknote in its grading holder. The page is for organising and viewing that holder, not replacing it. Compatibility varies by holder size, so do not assume every graded note will fit. Check compatibility with your binder before ordering; this is a page refill, not a complete album.

A Practical Final Check

Before ordering, confirm the coin, banknote, or package dimensions, the intended storage format, and the selected size and pack quantity. Read the manufacturer's material and care information rather than assuming all plastics or storage systems offer the same protection. If you are unsure, contact us with the item's dimensions and whether it is loose, in original packaging, or graded.
