Australia boasts approximately 1,900 known orchid species, with an impressive 90% being endemic. This cover showcases two stunning examples:
-
Cleopatra's Needles ( Thelymitra apiculata ): This exquisite purple-and-yellow orchid is native to the south-west of Western Australia, thriving in the shrublands and woodlands around Geraldton. Classified as rare or near threatened, it grows to a height of 20 to 25 centimetres.
-
Tiger Orchid ( Diuris sulphurea ): This bright-yellow orchid flourishes in forests, woodlands, and grasslands across all Australian states and territories, excluding Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Also known as a donkey orchid due to its elongated, droopy petals, it reaches a height of 20 to 60 centimetres.
