2016 20c Coin 'Anzac to Afghanistan' - Peacekeeping

This NCLT coin pays tribute to Australian Peacekeeping efforts by both military and police forces. In the early years Australian peacekeepers were generally unarmed military observers who were deployed to a conflict zone to ensure neither side would violate ceasefires or commit atrocities.

Australian peacekeeping missions have included operations in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Cambodia, Somalia and Rwanda. With tensions simmering closer to home Australian peacekeepers have also been deployed to Bougainville and East Timor to address the crisis in these regions. The latter mission dwarfed all previous peacekeeping efforts as the new nation achieved its independence from Indonesia.
